Chapter Eighteen

Jasper leaned against the warm railing with Snake lying by his feet. Both watched Shira and Serenity sprint through the maze, Zach following at a much slower pace. To most, it would appear he was taking a leisurely stroll, not caring how long it took him to figure his way through. But Jasper knew better. He was enjoying watching this game of cat-and-mouse as much as Zach was being part of it.

Jasper would be part of this little game if it weren’t for the fact that he hated mazes. No matter who he was with, or which ones he tried, he could never find it in him to have fun. However, watching others stumble their way through while he got a bird's-eye view? Yeah, he very much enjoyed that.

Shira doubled back, lifting Serenity into her arms and bolting down an alternative path, narrowly missing Zach’s grab for her. Her skirt swished around her legs, as if teasing Jasper’s memory of the stunt she’d pulled earlier.

She hadn’t lifted the article of clothing high enough for him to get a good peek, but damn, did she throw him off. Jasper’s hand on the railing curled, and he dragged his tongue over his bottom lip when Shira looked behind her to gauge where Zach was, and picked up her pace.

If Serenity wasn’t stuck to Shira’s hip today, Jasper would have happily gone into the maze this once. He’d be fine swapping places with Zach, given Shira was a potential reward. She clearly didn’t have the same reservations as his boyfriend, not that he had any issues with Zach’s choice to keep most things private. It didn’t matter to Jasper in the end, but a little extra thrill here and there was nice. And he’d be all too happy to catch her and see how comfortable she was.

It was the main disappointing aspect of him losing the wager. Jasper had been looking forward to seeing how much she’d allow him to ask of her. Of course, that didn’t mean he couldn’t still try. If he tempted her enough, she may be lured into doing what he’d hoped for anyway. And there’s still the matter of negotiations she promised.

Jasper shook his head. He couldn’t allow these thoughts into his mind. They’d drive him mad and frustrate him more than he already was. All he wanted was to be close to her. Talking to her—helping her—teasing her.

He took a sharp inhale of breath. When had he become so completely enthralled by her? At what point did he cross the point of no return for himself? Because he knew he was there. Jasper knew that spot well. He’d had it with Sara, and then with Zach.

Jasper’s attention fell to his boyfriend, who was gaining on Shira. Watching his determination to catch the wily woman, and Jasper having the perfect view of Zach’s physique, he spiraled back into those thoughts. These two are going to be the death of me.

Shira squealed. Zach had caught up and grabbed her around the waist, pulling her tight against him.
